For weekend camping, the San Mateo loop would be perfect for you. We often leave Friday after work and come back Sunday. As a bonus, you can check out early Sunday and drive about 9 miles back to the Doheney overflow parking area right on the beach and spend the rest of the day there where the kids can play all day in the sand and go in the water. Your tag from San Mateo will get you in free as they're both State campgrounds. We frequently do this when we have the grand kids with us.
San Mateo's about 69 miles from upland and probably a bit closer to you.
