Cleaning Awning

About a month ago I cleaned our awning with a mild bleach/water solution to remove mildew. While prepping for a trip today, I opened the awning and it is worse than before. We have had huge amounts of rain over the last month and water was trapped inside when I opened it.
How do you guys clean your awning?

I found the post below this weekend and tried it. It worked amazingly well. I can't yet vouch for the long term affects as it has been raining all day today. So far so good though. I also spent all day yesterday washing the roof and the entire exterior of the 5ver. Tough job but I'm glad I did it.

    How to clean awning:
Lowes: One gallon pump sprayer of Tilex mold and mildew cleaner

    Extend awning completely.

Spray 2-3 beginning at the roller edge on top and underside of awning, roll up to where you have sprayed

Continue to spray next 3 feet or so, roll up that much more

Finish spraying roll up awning completely

    Wait 20 to 30 min.

    Unroll, brush lightly on underside

    Rinse thoroughly.
This is a great idea! Thanks for sharing.

Once every 3 years or so when needed, I make a mixture of bleach and detergent some thing that foams up to help the mixture stay in place. I scrub with a long handle brush making suds then roll up awning brush again with clean mixture then rinse. Awning are original since 1996.

  • Totally Awesome cleaner and OxyClean. The oxygen released by the OxyClean helps to kill the mildew.
  • Per owners many for mg Domestic 9100 awning, spray with bleach water mix, roll awning up for five minutes then open up and thoroughly rinse. I do this every four months and mildew free. Good luck.
  • I know...awnings can be so yucky. I used Pine Sol and water to clean it, and to get that nasty stagnant smell off of it. Well it worked for a couple of weeks and then it stunk up again. When we walk under it, it still stinks to high heaven. I heard of people using spic and span with good results...we are going to try that next. Good Luck.
  • About the same way you did. Mild bleach with some Dawn and elbow grease.
