Cleaning grey tank sensors

The sensors in my grey tank have been working less and less effectively over the last several trips. Now, just after emptying the tank, the monitor still reads 3 bars full. Any way of cleaning them? -any additives I can add to the tank to clean them off?

The black tank works fine-I use the Geo method from time to time-but I can't get ice cubes in the grey tank.

I could handle the black tank not working-just shine a light down the open toilet to check levels-but the grey is a pain. We do a lot of a night here a night there boondocking and I hate soapy-water-in-the-bath-tub surprises.

Thanks

  • one one of my TT's I installed a quickie flush in the grey tank. worked great, not food junk hanging around after the dump.
  • Horst probes are a good answer, I plan to get around to installing them on all 3 tanks eventually. :)
  • I installed the Horst Miracle Probes in my Black Tank and they work great. Always reads correct and they are no expensive at all and they sell in kits if you want to do the grey and fresh water. Don't understand my manufacturers don't have them installed from the beginning. I understanding cost but for a few dollars more and have no issues is well worth it.
  • It isn't the sensors, it is crudded up tank walls that fool the sensors. Any thing that cleans the tank walls might help.

I have the TrueLevel non-contact system that Winnebago went standard with in 2005 (right after I bought mine of course so I had to add it) and right now my black tank reads full all the time. The gray started reading 2/3 full all the time few months after I installed the system.

I have pressure washed the black tank wall twice and it worked okay for a while then started reading full all the time.
In my years of trying all of the things people recommend I have not found anything that keeps the tank walls clean enough.

Last summer the rig sat unused next to the house all summer with the gray tank valve open and a hose that drained into a stone filled hole. When we got ready to head south and ran some water, a bunch of dried crud that had been on the side of the tank ran out. Since then (including all last winter) the gray water level has been accurate.

Some people have reported that the HORST MIRACLE PROBES work well. They shield and move the sensors out from the tank walls so the gunk doesn't fool them.
  • We fitted a SeeLevel tank monitoring system. Far more accurate and the sensors are on the outside of the tank so can't clog up.
  • You could use the HE washing machine cleaner. You would need more than one pack. Add them to tank and fill to 1/2 or 3/4 full. Drive / tow the RV to your next destination and dump and rinse.

These cleaners remove all the scum left inside a washer and it works well for this as well.
