Cleaning the H2O tank

My maintenance experience on self propelled vehicles designed to support human life is mostly limited to repairing commercial passenger jets. I realize that the standards in my industry are higher than those of the general public. What I can tell you is that commercial airlines spend a lot of money, time, and effort cleaning their potable water tanks. I am curious about the scheduled maintenance for water tanks in RV's. Trust me, I know way to much about the nasty stuff that likes to grow in wet, dark places. I am curious, did your RV come with a schedule for cleaning you potable water tank? And how vigilant are you about flushing and disinfecting your water tanks. Thanks.
  • I sanitized my tank when I first bought the clipper over 3 years ago. I always use my fresh water tank and have only filled it at home (with chlorinated city water). I suspect I will sanitize it again within the next year, but I haven't had any issues with the water at all. And yes, I do drink it.
  • No science or data behind it, but will try to remember to sanitize the tank every 6 months, 1 cup bleach into the ~50 gallon tank. Run the solution through the lines, pull the trailer around town, let it sit for 1/2 day (or longer), drain, refill tank with fresh water, run water through the lines and drain again.

We don't boondock, don't need to rely on the freshwater tank for drinking water. We filter the water water from the parks we visit. So far, so good.
  • I don't know of a schedule. I believe most RVers sanitize the fresh water system once or twice a year.
    Some, not at all.
