On the BBB
My company was approached by the BBB 15 years ago. Back then, you didn't join the BBB, You were invited by the BBB based on the number of or lack of complaints. They even pointed out that there were other services that you could just join and get a good rating but they were not like that.
We joined and had a Gold rating for over ten years but what we got out of it was little aside from being able to put their TM on our cards and a stack of gold certificates. When they changed to a buy your way to the top service, I saw companies I knew were scum getting gold ratings. The last straw was when I had to file a complaint against a roofer that was a member also. All he had to do was respond with we didn't have to do that even though it was in the contract and the BBB closed the complaint and cleaned up his record which is still gold to this day.
After that we didn't renew and after having a gold rating for 10 years were dropped to a silver even though we have never had a complaint. I wont use them as a referral service because like the roofer we got off of their site, you will never know the real number of unresolved complaints. It just isn't what it use to be.
That is the dirty little secret many are unaware of. It is the same with many consumer review sites. We had discussions with one and the innuendo was if you advertise any bad reviews will be place on the bottom.
