I don't drink coffee at all. I never have. I have never acquired the taste for it. But my wife is an avid (multiple pots of coffee a day) drinker!
However, I usually buy the coffee (really) and she usually selects the type of coffee pot. About the "cooking" device?
My wife has a little 4 cup drip coffee maker (electric) in the camper. She also has a small hand-held bean grinder. And she has an old style over-the-fire (blue color) percolator.
We tossed out our old over-the-fire percelator when we moved from tent camping to PUP and TT camping. Then one morning last Summer the campground lost power!
I ended up using a coffee filter in a cooking funnel, and put the coffee grounds in there. Then boiled water in a pot on the stove (gas you know), and poured it into the funnel and let it drip into a cup. It was a slow pain-staking method, but she said it was one of the best cups of coffee she ever had. I think she was just BS-ing me, making me feel better because I put so much effort into getting her the coffee. But, I appreciated her comments.
That's when we both decided we needed a back-up coffee pot. Next time we went to WallMart we picked up one of those over-the-fire percolators again. We've never used it, but in the event of another power outage, I won't have to go through that mess again. It will work just fine on the stove top.
Now, a word about the coffee itself. I don't drink coffee, but I sure like the aroma. So I have a pretty good nose. I pick the coffees, and try to never get the same kind twice in a row. I like the smell of the flavored coffees, but do also get the unflavored also. I've purchased about every kind of coffee available, and I think my wife really likes it this way, because she gets such a variety.
I recently discovered a Hawaiian themed coffee which she really like. I sometimes get beans, since we have a grinder in both the house and the camper, I keep some instant on hand (but she doesn't use that very much).
The reason I get the coffee, is because she ran into the mind set that she would get the cheapest priced on the shelf. Well, I started thinking about that and took charge! I decided the cheapest price is not the way to go. We have so very few means of entertainment, we don't "party", we don't consume alcohol except at New Year or our anniversary, and we are pretty much home-bodies. So this is one little way I decided she could be spoiled. So I get the coffee and it's my way of spoiling her a little. That's why I get such a variety
