COMMON CURTESY

Just drove 2 1/2 days from Cape Cod Mass to St Augustine FL at slightly below the speed limit (2 - 3 mph to reduce the resetting of cruise control). I had a total of 9 RV's pass me ... Class A + C, 5'ers, and TT's. As they passed, I flashed my lights to let them know it was safe to pull back in ... a time-honored custom. Not one .. NOT A SINGLE ONE had the courtesy to put on flashers for a second to acknowledge my signal. Truckers? About 85%. I will continue the practice for safety sake, but it would be nice to have that custom extended with a "Thanks fellow RV'er."
  • I also make sure it's safe to change lanes before doing so, regardless if someone flashes their lights. However, if some pays me this curtesy, I'll acknowledge them.
  • While I agree that it is up to me to determine when I can pull in, and that I only pull in when I feel its safe, I also appreciate that additional feedback from a fellow RV'r/trucker and I always give the tails a couple flashes to say Thanks.
  • Sorry, but no sympathy here. I, too, rely on my OWN judgment when passing/pulling in. I'm also concerning myself with safety, not making sure I don't hurt someone's feelings. It's not a courtesy, it's a nicety and not required.
  • Why let something like that bother you. I typically flash my lights also. If they give a flash in return, fine. If not, I just assume they don't know what truckers normally do. No big deal either way. And certainly not going to let it bother me.
  • I happen to agree also. It's the passing vehicle's responsibility to complete the pass safely. And whether it's Common Courtesy or not, IMHO the added task of flashing of lights makes this harder not easier...
  • Sorry Teacher, I will not rely on anyone else to determine if it is safe for me to do a lane change. I usually just ignore it and trust my own judgement. I would not acknowledge your flash.
