How far in advance do you normally get an arrival date?

We were on a volunteer list at a state park in SD and had a ton of offers around the state. Turned them down, specifying we wanted a particular park. Two weeks before the park opened for the season they had a volunteer cancel and then called and asked could we be there within two weeks. We were able to make it, but had to wrap up things at home rather quickly.
