This is an excellent comparison by PartyMarty .
his example compares very closely equivalent tires made by the same manufacturer , Good year :
ST235/80R16LRE
LT235/85R16LRE
as Fast Eagle clearly pointed out if the ST tire was exactly an ST235/85R16LRE size ( same size as the LT shown ) the ST tire would have an ST rating of 3640 # at 80 psi , vs 3420# for the ST235/80R16LRE .
So the difference in rating criteria between ST and LT is even more pronounced than the data shown by PartyMarty .
The most important control data is that Goodyear manufactures both tires .
GY is a leading seller of ST tires and LT tires . OEM for both .
Goodyear has discovered that the 50 pounds of cords and rubber necessary to achieve a load range E tire in an LT235/85R16LRE is not needed to achieve the easier ST rating LRE .
If Goodyear could get by with the 38 # of cords and rubber used in the ST tire and achieve an LT rating with that smaller amount of material they would do that .
The ST fans wish to cloud the facts . In response to their statements :
There is no variance in PSI , both are rated at 80 psi .
There is no additional High Tech engineering in the Cheaper ST tire .
It is not logical to believe that less cords and rubber achieve more load carrying capacity , especially if the 50 # tire only carries 3042 # and the 38 # tire carries 3420 # .
The difference is the LT scale vs the ST scale .
The ST tire is rated for 65 mph and the LT tire is rated for 99 mph.
The ST tire has printed boldly on the sidewall " for trailer use only " .
The LT tire has no warning or limitation .
The logical conclusion reached by rational thinkers is that the LT criteria is tougher than the ST criteria .
Don't forget, LT tires are designed to carry live humans that can sue the manufacturer if they blow going down the road, which is almost unheard of. ST tires aren't.
