Compendium of States' RV Laws

Is there anywhere online that you can see a collection of the laws affecting RV operation in the various states? Like ... those that require toad braking systems, lower speed limits for RVs, requirement to drive in the far right lane ... that sort of thing, or others that we would never have thought of?

We're planning to travel in the MH at the end of this year, going through a lot of different states. We don't want to run into "gotcha" situation that would be inconvenient or cause an interruption in our travels.

Thanks!

  • I don't have links handy now but when we had 5'er and were thinking of double towing boat, I compared several of the ones Google found and there was lots of inconsistency in them for Georgia laws. Also, most did not agree with what a high ranking friend in State Patrol told me. So, keep in mind what you find online is "what the internet says" about the laws. Your best source but much more time consuming is to search for online version of the state's actual statutes. I use LexisNexis for Georgia searches...not sure if they have other states setup or not.
  • For the MOST part, if you're legal in the state of registration you're legal everywhere. Exceptions are made for towing double trailers, maximum length and a few other items. Licensing is ALWAYS reciprocal from state to state. Having it be otherwise would make RV travel nearly impossible.
  • Google "RV state laws". You'll get plenty of hits.
  • Can't answer your question exactly to laws, but the only thing that messed me up was the Diesel pumps in a few different states. We're pretty spoiled with the green handle in our area for diesel. Some states (can't remember which ones) use green handle for other things. After that experience I just don't grab the green handle anymore I READ what fuel product is supposed to come out. Some places had Diesel #1 and #2 and bio and off road. Confusing, first time for me.
  • I just bought the 2014 Good Sam North American Travel Guide. The "Rules of the Road", and "Towing Laws" for all states start on page 170.
