Concerned about traffic signals with short yellow light

I've found a good trick I've used for years. If there are cross walk lights I'll glance at them if green no problem, flashing red slow a little, and if they are red get ready to stop. On the new cross walk lights they have a count down when they go red so you can see it far enough back so you can judge if you need to slow down or keep rolling.
