I'm not so sure that he meant the radiator was rotting from the inside. PA road salt embedded in the radiator fins might be the issue with aluminum failing.
I did read a good explanation of why diesel engines need additional coolant changes versus gasoline engines. I don't have it at hand right now, but it has to do with the way a diesel ignites the fuel like detonation in a gas engine. That detonation is heard as the typical diesel rattle we all know and those shocks cause material within the water jackets to break off at a molecular level and contaminate the coolant.
