I often wonder why those folks chose to live in that area
This kind of statemet is unfortunately very lame. People live where they live for a variety of reasons. You are prone to nature's ills no matter where you live. Hopefully if you live in this area you have the means to build an appropriate type of underground shelter and keep your insurance policy up to date.
