When people want to make a point they will sometimes exaggerate the facts. The OP makes it sound like you can't find a hotel on the highway for $50 a night any more. I just travelled from Dallas to Tampa and back and that was about average for us. Sure you can spend $150, $200, even $300 a night, but those places don't compare to staying at an RV park in a non-special location - just a place to park and hookups. Those can cost $30 or $40 in a lot of areas and it seems too high to me. What are they providing? No roof. No bed. No bath. Just a parking space with water and electric for $10 or $20 less than a non-special hotel room. But the economy rules; supply and demand never sleeps. If those are the prices, those are the prices and I'll pay what it takes. I'll also check out opportunities to save like Passport America. Any others would be good to hear about.
I can say they are very few if any decent hotels in my area for $50.00
Even if you can find a few , I doubt I would want to stay there .
In your area if the hotels are higher, the campgrounds are probably higher, too. As we used to say when we were kids: Same diff.
Relative to more remote areas our CG's are more expensive. In general the land is more valuable. State parks $40.00 ish, Decent private CG $60.00 ish Resort Areas $80-110.00 or so.
Relative to the rest of the country I'm sure our CG's are more expensive but so is our real estate in general.
On the other hand I consider our hotel cost average relative to the rest of the country
