We've now done two separate 42 day summer trips, combined driving of 13k miles. Both trips were for 4 people and we spent less than 4k dollars on each. Truth told, it was likely closer to 3k if you consider we would have spent entertainment money at home to some extent. So let's use $3.5k.
That math works out to between 80 and $90 per day. An alternative, but much different trip would have been to fly the major distance, rent vehicles, hotel rooms and restaurants. I have no idea the math on that, but it would have to be 4 times as much.
I enjoy this conversation, but understand both sides. In fact, the older I get, the more I understand just how different we all are.
Case in point: We are traveling to my parents 700 miles away for Christmas. This is the first time we are bringing the trailer with us and are going to do a "Cousin Eddie" style Christmas! My parents have a guest room, so why do it? I'm getting older, and I want MY stuff, MY place to go to the bathroom, MY furniture to sit in at the end of a day, MY place to be for the first hour of the morning with MY coffee...and on and on. Sure, the trip will cost me an extra few hundred dollars, but I get so much for that!
I would have never considered visiting my parents this way until recent years. As I reflected on frustrations of having several families all packed into one space, I realized that it isn't always worth it to do things the cheaper way.
