I guess this points out the difference in expectations when one is "vacationing"? I've stayed in all those places, and they're OK. Too bright, noisy, crowded, and expensive for my tastes. And I'd much rather walk outdoors and see beavers at work in their pond, than Navy Pier. I can ALWAYS camp on the outskirts of a town and drive in to see the sights; but it's pretty hard to stay downtown and hear a loon at night.
However, I'm not helping the Chambers of Commerce by camping in the boondocks, so it's good that LOTS of people DO support the cities.
