I for one am interested in going places where hotels are few and far between. Many of those are National Forests, where campsites are cheap and even cheaper with the Golden Age pass.
Consider a 3 week trip with sites averaging something like $10/night, as opposed to $100 for any hotel room fit to stay in, assuming a hotel room is even available. 21 nights at a price difference of $90/night = $1890. A few trips like that will pay for a modest RV.
Yes, you use more gas, but if you fly somewhere you need a rental car, which would be something like $40-$60/day on the conservative side. You can buy a lot of gas for that price.
Sure you spend money on food, but you would do that at home, too.
I considered a week vacation in Arizona for February, flying out & renting a car...but walked away with sticker shock. That much money will fund a lot of RV nights, for sure.
