if it's one of those non-adjustable types then ditch it for a Watts 263-A (several versions to choose from. I recommend the stainless steel version). one source is RV Water Filter Store.

be sure you clean the lint filter before using and don't overfill. the less clothes in a dryer the better it will work. as for the stains..we've never encountered that but pigs are occasionally encountered.
