Wrong way to merge;
Right way to merge;
Correct procedure;
Maintain a reasonable speed in your lane until the point of lane closure. At the point of lane closure, all traffic merges smoothly into the open lane.
I almost always maintain a cautious/reasonable speed in the lane that is closing until time to merge at the blockage.
One time I saw signs in a construction area that said right lane closed ahead. I stayed in the right lane and drove past thousands of cars for at least five miles until the construction area ended. The right lane was not closed! :B I've always wondered what all the lanesitters in the left lane thought after about 45 minutes when they discovered the right lane never closed.
Due to drivers not understanding the correct way to merge, many highway departments have change the way they post signs. It used to be that signs about a lane closure were posted many miles before the construction because it was thought that more advanced notice was safer. What they discovered is all the lanesitters would line up in one lane and create a parking lot/traffic jam. Now the signs are usually much closer to the actual closure to reduce the number of lanesitters/lemmings/sheeple.
