Seriously, try it before you knock it. It works. You may not like that it works, but it works.
I imagine it does work if there isn't much traffic. If the traffic is heavy, then the guy behind you will also slow down, and he'll most likely slow down a bit more than you do. And it will snowball and you'll have a slowdown in traffic for no real reason.
And it would be worse if the guy behind isn't paying close attention, it does happen, and taps his brakes because he's closing too fast. Now you have a total mess, and, again, for no real reason.
Motorcycles are the best solution because you can easily filter through the heavy traffic.
