On a recent trip I tried out a new Nationwide credit card.At a couple of gas stations saw signs on the pumps spelling out money limits on certain card.One station stopped at $75 but would not retake card.At one station stopped at $75 but let me run another $75 after rerunning card.At a truck stop ran over $175 and did not stop.Has anyone been able to have their credit limit upped when using it for fuel?

It's usually set by the gas/fuel station corporation through the "point of sale" (POS) system. It's a way for the corporations to limit losses through fraud. No way to up the limit amount. Truck stops will have higher limits on the truck islands.It's a pain and now the stations are adding $.10 per gallon when you use your credit or debit card.Guess we need to begin carrying large amounts of cash....

Either had to take it inside, or call the credit card company when we got within cell range and tell them to stay on the line while we filled up to prevent the card being locked if a cashier wasn't available at night.Bill

It depends on the gas station. Most will cut you off at $75 because that's how much the average soccer mom uses, and it minimizes loss due to fraud or drive-offs. Some might allow another swipe, some don't. I've encountered a few with a $90 limit, and few that I've not found a hard stop with.

When I use the card as a debit card I get cutoff. Used as a credit card does not get cutoff.

I carry a MC and a VISA. Before I hit the road in the RV I call the number on the back of the card and tell them when and where I'll be traveling. It doesn't eliminate all of the automatic pump stops, but it helps at some places.

Most fuel station pump limits are set at whatever amount the CC company will reimburse for accepting a fraudulent card.

It depends on the station. I use one card for fuel. Some pumps stop at $75 and some at $125. If I need more, I just run it again.

Sometime, if you take the card in before pumping they will not impose the "pump limit". They will just turn the pump on and bill in one transaction when done.

It's one reason I like my Pilot/Flying J fuel card. I just pump, no limit. Save $0.08 per gallon (GS Lifetime Member) which helps, but it's convenient and that makes me happy. Even at a $0.10 per gal difference in price from the Mom and Pop, it's worth the $2-3.00 for convenience and the diesel is probably fresher. Have you looked at some of the diesel nozzles at some "gas stations" ? yuck!

I've NEVER encountered this situation. My DW goes off like an alarm clock when the fuel guage reaches 1/2 empty/full. It's easier to pull over and fill up than to get a lecture at every exit. As long as diesel stays under $4.70/gallon, 16 gallons will be less than $75.
