I started to use 2 credit cards, because running it twice at the same gas station meant that I would need to call the CC card company before using it again, as it would get locked out.
And my 75 gallon tank in my RV could use a lot of gas back when it was $4 a gallon! 25 gallons is $100. So I would fill with 75 gallons with card A, then used card B for another 25 gallons, then I would be able to drive another 300 miles or so, and repeat! If I was really low on gas, I would go in and pre-approve say $150, and then use card B to finish filling the tank. That would usually do the trick!
