Cruise control or not

I am fairly new to towing and I just thought about using cruise control when towing. I have taken several trips in the last year and realize that I have never used it while towing. Do you use it? Are there any concerns when doing so, other than the obvious?

  • Use cruise most of the time, makes for a much more relaxing drive and saves fuel.
  • We use it maybe 40% of the time, most of our driving is on mountainous roadways where I prefer to have control of the acceleration pedal.
  • seems a subject of some debate.

manual for my ram says no cruise if speed drops more than 10 mph while towing up a grade... so far I've only seen a 2-3 mph drop on the little hills we have around here in Michigan.

Personally, I'm not worried about damage to the truck; I'm under warranty and only borrowing it from Fiat for a few years, someone else can replace the tranny. :B

If I go over a big bump or railroad tracks the computer shuts off the cruise control, so I figure it will shut off the cruise if it's damaging the engine / transmission. If not, the the computer should disable it when tow/haul is engaged.
  • I don't use it when I am towing in the mountains, but I do when I am on the flats.
  • yes as much as I can as I get better guel millage with it. May not work well with some hills.
