CW generator - Champion 4000

Just bought a new generator for the TT, it is the Champion 4000 from CW. We were going for the inverter but the price was too high for our budget; for $300 hundred got the champion and will be able to run the AC( 13500btu) when too hot outside and the wife will be very happy ;)

I am planning to attach (bolted) it to the rear cargo carrier when needed. We are planning to do some short road trips and not depend on staying in CGs. Where do you guys stay when using this type of generator? Any issues? Do you have it mounted to your trailer?

If for any reason i have to mod the unit to make it quieter, any suggestions?

I will have more questions about it; Thanks for your input.

It's the same at every CG I've been to here on west coast and that exactly how we do it. You would never hear my generator running at 8am let alone 6am unless I'm out in a dispersed area. I have an on the stove percolator and an inverter. I see no reason to wake up in the morning and run a generator for a cup of coffee. I'm thinking that running it between 9:30am and 11:30am then again in the afternoon, before campers get settled in for dinner, like a 3 -5 kind of thing.

68dB at 23 ft cannot be accurately described as "under" 70 dB at one meter (3.28 ft). Noise level decreases with the square of the distance. So if you move the Champion to one meter away it will drown out the noise of several vacuum cleaners.

My point was, at 23ft away from you, it's about as loud as a vacuum right next to you. I never said anything about the generator being a 3.28ft from me.

Running a loud generator may have different rules...

I have the 2KW Honda Inverter type Generator and the only reason I run it is to charge up my battery bank starting at 8Am each morning. This takes around three hours of generator run time if I start doing it when my batteries are at their 50% charge state. Then I can run off the batteries the next day/night run off the battery bank...

Actually the Champions are not extremely loud. Not to Be a downer, but it's pretty much a waste of time and money to attempt to make it quieter. You will probably not want it attached to your trailer.

I have this model of Champion:
    Champion
Says its 68 dBA at 23 ft.

Which is just under your average vacuum at 70 dBA at 1m.
    SPL levels

The Honda EU2000i has a dBA of 59, they don't list how far away it is.

I pulled out my onboard Generac since it had some issues and replaced it with the Champion. I haven't used it yet in a CG, since mostly we dry camp at riding areas. I can tell you this though. The Generac was under our bed at the front of the TH, it was incredibly loud and the exhaust pipe came out right under the window in the bedroom area. The difference between the two was night and day when standing right next to it. With the genny 23' out from the TH, you barely notice it with the AC on Low. If the AC is on Hi, or a TV/Radio going, you don't notice it.

Best use will be on BLM land where you're not closer than 1/2 mile to anyone else (also avoid being too close to lakes, as water allows the sound to travel further). If you have a local BLM office, they may be able to tell you about dispersed camping areas not too far from home.

As already suggested, you'll likely want that off your TT when actually running. Since you plan on running your AC off it, get an appropriately rated extension cord if you want it to be further away than your current cord reaches.

    Hopefully nowhere near me!

Yes. Get a 100' extension cord and place it over an embankment. That's about the best you can do.

A lot of folks talk about it, but actually running an air con, especially with a loud generator, is not a common occurrence. Most people just go outside. Your most likely use will be charging batteries and watching TV, which will get very irritating listening to it run at full bore all the time.
