The rise on the Glowsteps is 7" as opposed to 9" on the typical fold-out steel steps. A riser height of 7" is what you'd get by building code in a house and 9" is not only above the code limit, it's uncomfortable to walk up.
The Glowstep riser height from the ground to 1st step is the same as the other risers. With fold-out steps, the bottom step can be close to the ground or way above the ground depending on the slope of a site.
The Glowsteps also substantially reduce bounce inside.
