DEF addative

OK, someone please enlighten me. I have an older 7.3L TD and haven't a clue as to what this stuff is. I only know that I don't need it. But seriously, what does it do?

DEF = Diesel Exhaust Fluid. It get injected into the exhaust upstream of emissions equipment. My truck doesn't even smell like a diesel when running. Or like a taser for that matter. Kinda has a sweet smell to it. Whatever you do don't put it in with the fuel. Bye bye fuel system in that case.

Buy it at a high volume dealer. When tractors first came out with it the factory sent us two mandatory pallets of it. Went bad before we could sell it all.

OK, I'm a dunce. I'll ask it one last time. What does this stuff accomplish? Anyone?

You can find that info at the link I posted earlier......you can goggle it for pages and pages of info......it is an emissions control fluid for diesel fuel.

Just like gasoline engines have catalytic converters, diesel engines have to have selective catalytic reduction systems for NOx control.
Basically urea (ammonia solution) is injected into exhaust...reacts with NOx (breaks it down into Nitrogen and water)

From what I understand spraying the DEF (cow piss/urea) is added to the exhaust system to lower the NOX (nitrogen oxide). the one item in the "green" equation is the cost in energy to make the stuff, distribute it, and electrically pump it or to fill plastic jugs (another waste), and the energy costs to package, distribute and sell the stuff. Of course the true information is seldom mentioned in detail to the newbie buyer by the hack greenies. (Let the buyer beware).

Our 2015 Sprinter gets right at 1000 miles per gallon. It takes 2-1/2 gallons when the DEF check comes on.

I get mine at Walmart for a little less than $12 for 2 1/2 gallons. My DEF tank holds 13 gallons and I'll usually wait until it gets down to about a half tank (approx 6 1/2 gallons) and I'll buy two of the Walmart boxes (5 gals). I can get about 100 miles to a gallon of DEF.

Don't confuse this DEF with a fuel additive. It does NOT go into the fuel tank as it has its own. The fluid is used in the catalytic converter to increase the temperatures so that it will burn any unburnt fuel in the exhaust system.

After 7000 miles, I can run my finger around the "inside" of my tail pipe and my finger comes out perfectly clean. No soot or carbon what so ever.

Opps... I dropped a digit. Make that 1000 miles per gallon. Stupid finger! :o With a little over 7000 miles on my odometer, I've put in 7 1/2 gallons of DEF so far.
