There frequently are "sales" on these meters, I believe Walgreens was the last place I got one, where you can get essentially a free test meter, with a rebate, discount, etc.
my latest meter, which I sprung $19.99 for, is a contour next USB. just plug it into a usb port and it downloads automatically and charts your readings. these Bayer strips are covered by my insurance.
interestingly enough, that meter sold for $69 (IIRC) at Sam's club pharmacy but Walmart had it for $19.99? I wouldn't describe the walmart pharmacy as unfriendly but it was always basically a zoo. so I transferred everything to sam's club and much less hectic, no long waits, etc.
