Dialing back the S&B costs while cruising

When we left on our current two month/7,500 mile cross country adventure we eliminated several of the monthly bills. Turned off Direct TV, the paper and trash collection etc., and most of the electrical vampires throughout the house. Just got my electric bill through the internet... $34 for May instead of the usual $140. I figure we are saving about $300 a month... Or two tanks of gas. :S

  • We heat our home with wood and when we go away we turn on the oil furnace and use, depending on how cold it is, about $500 to $700 month. We don't save anything by going away but we still do it about 5 months a year.
  • We always turn off the water at the street when going on a long trip not for saving money, but in case of a leak. When in MI, we were back in Florida for 2 1/2 weeks and had a pipe burst. I ran 180,000 gallons of water through my house. The sump pump in the basement pumped it all out, but the house was a wreck.
  • Electric hot water too - but not Directv! :)

I can always tell how cold it's been by my online electric bill.
