Dicor equivalent?

Here I am in paradise (Oahu) and no Dicor to be found. I'm driving a friend's Izuzu and it's raining in the cargo area. I suspect the water is entering thru the roof rack attachments but there is no way I'm going to remove them. My buddy is not an RVer so I suggested a tube of magic: Dicor! Off to the local hardware store. They've never heard of it. Same with Home Depot and Lowes. There were many other products by DAP but I (and the staff) have no idea of what is equivalent to Dicor. I found a Marine store that swears by this. It looks like it seals and stops leaks internally, but I want insurance with a little goop on top. Any ideas?
  • Mahalo, Len. I'm cat sitting on Alala Rd. Napa and Hardware Hawaii are close. I'll search for a caulking gun in the garage. If no joy, I'll call you.
Yes, Kailua is beautiful I know. We lived on Kawailoa Rd for 10 years before I had to go back to Vancouver. My aim is to retire here. Four years, five months and two days to go! But who's counting, right?
  • Nightshift, I am counting!!! Retirement will happen this year. We store our RV in the SFO area and jump into it 3-4 times a year. Once retirement occurs we will take longer and more frequent RV trips. One problem we are dealing with right now is grandchildren are being born and we supply daycare for now. Can't wait for the first grandchild to age a bit so we can take him with us. Retiring here and traveling the mainland (RVing) is the best of both worlds.
  • I couldn't agree more. Our plan is identical. We're going to store ours and do 3 or 4 mainland trips a year.

The answer to your problem is 3M 5200. Available at Napa and Hardware Hawaii, both here in Kailua.

Len, you were right. 3M 5200 works well. A skin formed overnight and the directions say 7 days for full cure. Good stuff if you can't find Dicor.

No question 5200 is a fine sealant but do be aware that it is a very high-strength sealant (tensile strength of 700 psi). I would not put it on anything that you might want to take apart in the future. 3M use to make a 4200 which is similar but not quite as permanent.
