I really liked the DeLorme Topo 4.0 program that I bought many years ago. They stopped with Topo 10.0 or something.

With topo, you could plan a route, then find out how many feet per mile you where climbing uphill or downgrades, and what the steepest grade in route would be. I do not know any other programs with that feature. And it sure is nice to have the DeLorme GPS, so I had a 15" GPS screen!
