You'll pay more up front for a diesel and spend a little more on maintenance, but you'll spend less on fuel (significantly if you tow a lot) and will get more back on resale. In the scheme of what you'll spend on either truck, the cost difference is a wash. But with the diesel you do get the bonus of a far more capable tow vehicle.
OP, a ton depends on how you drive and what type of terrain you are going through. For a 6000 lb TT I'd bet on 12-13 mpg most of the time.
