Similar trailer specs to yours. My 2003 1/2 ton Silverado v8 gasser got 10-12 mpg towing. My 2016 3/4 ton Silverado diesel gets 10-12 mpg towing. Fortunately in my area diesel tends to be cheaper than gas, but it’s marginal. FYI.
The only way to get much better mileage is to get a pre-emission year diesel or do a delete on a newer one.
There is about 0 chance of this in an apples to apples comparison.
Then you missed the point. I was not comparing the towing capabilities of the two dramatically different tow vehicles. I was comparing relative gas milage between two different vehicles towing the same TT. The point being that for those who think moving to a diesel may provide dramatically improved gas milage might be disappointed. This is one example and those others posted are additional info. But, thanks for your opinion and the additional info.
I presumed you weren't comparing the towing capabilities as they're not even close.
What I was saying is if you rolled onto I 90 eastbound, hauled butt out to Spokane, turned around, drove back in a head wind. Took a couple trips over 2 or 12 or 410, all at the same speed, trailer and weather conditions, there is no way the old 5.3 would get as good of gas mileage as the new Dmax would.
Can you get to the same place with roughly the same gallons used in both trucks? Absolutely, but you'll do it slower in the gasser or faster in the diesel to close the gap.
I do have to credit the new gassers, GMs in particular. My new 5.3 Silverado legitimately gets very close to new or pre dpf diesel mileage when driving empty. Scary almost.
It is also affected more by small changes. Adding 265 AT tires last winter, hot or cold, truck got 1-2mpg less, not huge, but noticeable compared to the 255 size baloney skins. Mileage came back when it put the slicks back on this summer.
Diesel is affected, but not quite the same magnitude.
Hook a trailer and never let it see 4cyl mode though and it drinks as much gas as any gas powered truck. I have pulled all sizes of trailers regualrly between most models of pickup trucks for the last 20 years. More with gas (company trucks) and gass = worse mileage.
