Diesel fueling Etiquette

This is actually a source of stress for me when pulling our TT in uncharted areas.

Truck stops, am i to use the semi areas, or the stalls for regular travelers?

Will I fit at that station?

Is my rig in someone's way?

Heading into the mountains, where will i be able to stop?

Once i hit ½ tank it's full on paranoia.

Something about the open road, towing, unfamiliar locations, it drive me insane worrying about my next stop.

We traveled the Ohio turnpike and each time we stopped it specifically said truck, rv, etc, use this entrance, every time i pulled to the diesel pump, i was in the wrong spot to fuel a non-commercial vehicle.

What are your go to places? large truck stops, local gas stations, i'm always looking for the easy in/easy out where i ruffle no feathers.

I love being on the road, doing the lifestyle, but this drives me crazy....

    Relax man. It'll get better.

Stay the heck away from populated areas. More people equals more cars and more stress. Look for truck stops out of town, well away from cities and suburbs.
  • IF you are worried about being in someones way, you stay with the rig do the refueling and let your co-pilot stand in line and pay the bill
  • My plan is to get in and get out, no screwing around. I go to whatever pump--usually out front. If I cen get the PU to a pump and then back out fine. What ever is fast and easy. The pumps out front take credit cards, usually the truck pumps don't.
  • If you fuel at Truck stops, Fuel, PULL FORWARD..like they do, go inside pay, then MOVE... ..Do what you want.

DO NOT .pull up, block a Truck Stop Pump, dinking around inside, then fuel then pay...It is Unwise....( They are much bigger in size)..:W
  • I stop where I want. The only thing I do is I try not to box anyone in.
  • just go do it,nobody cares. take care of your unit and move on. I,ve pulled into stations didn,t like the set up and pulled .
  • We stop where ever we want. Like yc1 said. And the station wants your bisiness.
  • I could care less about ruffling feathers. I don't think I have ever seen one concerned look either. I use the truck stops because a 40 footer and a toad are hard to get around. Fill, pull forward, then go inside if you have to pay. We then move to the parking lot to stretch the dogs and take a break ourselves.

Using the Rand McNally GPS is a fantastic tool for finding fuel along your route or near someplace you are interested in. Just touch a couple of buttons and you can easily find truck stops along the way and what features they have. Some have no place to park other than fueling so I try to avoid those.

If you want to pre flight your trip use Google maps to find fuel and then zoom into the place so you can actually see street level turns. In some cases I will print the pictures out and make notes. No worries exactly what the stop looks like or how to enter and exit.
