IMHO...the diff ratio does matter...just not as much today with the close ratio trannies out there...especially those with a double OD
Agree that the final ICE RPM vs pavement MPH is what matters...with factoring in the ICE's torque/HP curve...where you wish to be on that curve at whatever speed (MPH) you wish to be driving/cruising/climbing at
Here is the one just found on the internet for a 2016 GM 5.3L
If pure MPG, suggest keeping it in the +/- 3,000 to 4,000 RPM range
If pure climbing, headwind, etc...suggest keeping it in the +/- 4,000 to 5,000 RPM range
Then work it backwards from pavement MPH back to the ICE's RPM...that will tell which gear of the tranny and/or factored by the diff ratio/tire rev's per mile, which gets back to the tire OD vs whatever your OEM tire dia/rev's are
{edit}...PS...this is only for 'this' engine & year...other ICE's and model/era years will/might be different...there is no one size fits all here...even socks, IMHO
Also, it is an automatic right? If so, then let it do its job and be sure to engage the Tow/Haul button/function. If manual, then my comments more applicable
