Was this tempered glass--did it shatter into a zillion little tiny pieces? Or normal glass, which breaks into a few long sharp shards?
Especially if it's tempered glass, a small nick or flaw in an edge can lead to it breaking when under (comparatively) little stress. It may not have been perfect glass to begin with, or not correctly installed.
