Apply parking brake and foot brake. Put transfer case in neutral. Turn key off with transmission in park. Remove parking brake. I never pull any fuses.
I had an '06 Silverado and after several thousand miles pulling the transfer case got hard to shift. GM replaced the gears under warranty, but it was always hard. It was the manual transfer case.
I now have to electric transfer case and it's easy. I don't think, if the transfer case is in neutral and the transmission is in park, you could hurt the transmission towing it. Maybe a coincidence.
I literally xeroxed the page from the manual on the procedure and put it on my visor. I use it as a check list.
