My 1000 lb spring bars are the L-shaped style and I can latch or unlatch the chains with my hand by raising the tongue hitch when the ball is latched. My hitch head is tilted back at the maximum angle giving me the most preload. My tongue weight varies 750-1000 lbs based on what I am carrying in my enclosed trailer.
The only way you really know how well your WDH is working is to measure your tow vehicle axle weights at a scale. If you can find a scale that is working but closed for normal operations, this is best place to adjust your spring bar tension so that at least half the weight differential between loaded and unloaded without WDH is restored to your front axle with the WDH engaged. If you have been guessing your tongue weight, this will be the time to get actual weight - You may find it is heavier than you thought and the spring bars are not heavy enough for your application. You may also find the tow vehicle rear springs may not be sufficient for the tongue weight and you are biasing more to the front than is typical.
