Do I need a Sidewinder?

I recently updated my tow vehicle to 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab short box. With my previous shortbox I was able to get away without a slider hitch and didn't have any problems. I was wondering if I will now need one. I'm hoping not but fearing I will. Anyone with this setup that can tell me?
  • Yes, box is 5'6". Previous tv was 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 extended cab short box 6'
  • It would help if we knew what your previous truck was. Brand and year.
  • By "Short box" do you mean the 5'6" box, rather than the 6'8" "standard" ox or the 8' "long box".
If you mean the 5'6" box, then yes, you need some means of avoiding trailer to truck cab contact.
That can be a Sidewinder or a sliding hitch.

Edit:- Be aware that the low payload capacity of your 1/2 ton truck is going to limit the fiver to a very small/light unit. A fiver puts much more load on the truck than a conventional trailer.
