Do we need another brake system ??

Hi All

We purchased a Honda Fit to be our toad & are shopping for the tow bar etc.
We see that a Road Master Invisi 8700 brake system will be about $1,000 plus installation.
We went online tonight & found that very few states require a braking system on a towed vehicle but our home state of Florida does for any towed car that weighs 3,000 lbs & more.
Our Honda Fit only weighs 2,600 lbs.
My question to you all is - do we really need to buy an auxiliary braking system for our toad ??
We'd appreciate any & all comments !!

Thanks !!

  • It's not simply the extra 10% (or more) emergency stopping distance you need to take into account, but think about what would happen if the toad got loose with no brakes.
Be interesting to see where the liability ended up!
  • If you can add 2500-3000 pounds to your coach and not increase stopping distance, that would be a good thing. I have a braking system on my 16 year old Honda Accord.
  • Yes, I too think you need a braking system for the toad. After one panic stop, you'll believe in it. (been there done that)

  • You'll be safer with the aux braking system. I installed mine because it allows me to stop sooner than without. I really didn't care if it was required or not. I feel it's my responsibility to my family and to those using the roadway with me, to be as safe as possible. The cost of a braking system is cheap compared to someone getting injured or killed because it took me 15 extra feet to stop my rig.....Dennis
  • I wouldn't leave home without a braking system.
