We budget for "major" vacations... but weekend camping getaways usually cost less than staying at home (as long as we don't go near major shopping destinations...).
When we went to Disney World twice and stayed at Fort Wilderness, we figured out most of the costs and paid for as much as possible in advance. When I say in "advance", I mean the costs that we put on a credit card (most all of the various reservations) we made sure were all paid off before we went - so that when we returned, we weren't still paying for the vacation. We did some rough figuring for spending cash, and brought that with us. Traveling / fuel costs I had great help figuring by asking people here on the forums (thanks all!). Not only did we have great trips, but when we got home we didn't owe any money for the trips.
I like to plan. Some people might think it takes away the spontaneity of a situation, but I find I enjoy my self more.
