I like to plan. Some people might think it takes away the spontaneity of a situation, but I find I enjoy my self more.
X2. My very very first trip, I went to Hawaii with a sibling. I had $400 in travelers checks for the day to day expenses for a week. Halfway through, I was out of cash and couldn't identify where it all went. I ended up supplementing with a credit card and telling my sibling "I don't have the money, go do that by yourself". I hated that feeling and swore it would never happen again.
So, since then, I have budgeted. I break it out by expense type. I keep a coupon folder for receipts, etc. And as I am on my trip, I check my spending against my budget. This lets me choose to splurge on something (a fancy meal or a purchase or an unexpected entertainment opportunity) without stressing if I've overbudget. And when I get home, I have no bills and have all those memories locmed away in my coupon folder.
