I remember back in the late 60's and early 70's Mom had a VW bus. And every time we went to the dealer for service they almost always had a VW Camper on the floor with that popup top. I was in awe of the features it offered. Now I am in awe of what they are worth restored....amazing!!!
Always wanted one, since my AurForce days when a colleague had one, Sportmobile camper on Gen 2 Type 2, and not only could he camp in it, could pack everything he owned, which wasn't a lot but include a Triumph Bonneville. This was 1971, had three more of these vans in the office, one a Westfalia, one standard passenger seats, and one configured as a party van. Yet another guy in the shop built a late '60s Econoline as a travel and party van. Thinking about it now, five vans in a 12-man shop three of them campers, had to say something about the time and the people. Three more of us tent camped.
I'm thinking if I can get my travel needs down to the size of a van, I'm not really downsizing. Working on the "removable camper" concept, so that the van/minivan/MPV retains everyday use when not camping. I've seen this in Europe, not so much here. But they are doing "camper" and we get focused on "home on wheels" and it is not easy to shrink that.
