Do you have goals, aims or neither in life?

Everybody talks about how important it is to have goals, but I disagree. A goal has to be specific, measurable, and has a deadline. (For example, retire at 60 years old with x dollars in the bank) Sorry, but I don't like goals and nobody has ever convinced me that they lead to success or happiness.

Aims, on the other hand, may not be specific or measurable and they definitely don't have deadlines. For example, my aims in life are to live a long, healthy, happy life. That's it. No specifics involved. If I get off track and eat poorly or don't exercise for a few days, no problem, I can get right back on track and aim in the right direction immediately.

It seems to me that travelers can be classified the same way. Some have goals (i.e. to see all 48 contiguous states in one year) and some have aims (I'll head South for the winter). I would imagine that some don't have either goals or aims and simply take each day as it comes and let nature follow its course.

So, do you have goals, aims, or neither?
  • When I was 17 I set my sights on graduating from high school and only made it by the skin of my teeth (1.5gpa). I did NOT set smart goals, back at that age when I should've. Growing up as an only child I had no further goals after that, college was not going to be my thing, and I had a job that actually back then paid pretty good. I could afford my old car and I had a girlfriend, so life was good…. Then along came real life…. The draft notice, all this discussion about exactly what is a goal, aim or objective is exactly why I don't set goals. Whenever I set one something changes it that is outside of my control. I think many people, like me (66), stumble through life and then wonder what happened. I kind of had a plan when I got to 40 that I could retire at 50, but then the 5 rental houses I invested in, in a town that was just right, basically closed down, no one could afford to live there without jobs and they moved in mass numbers and the houses went to auction and I lost my shorts. Then I said OK, I will work until I am 62 then retire, and the wife and I will travel maybe fulltime with the MH, then she says a couple of years later, OH NO, I don’t want to fulltime, maybe just for a week at the most, I have to take care of my garden and watch the grand kids (who have all but moved away), but the garden comes before traveling. So that goal/plan, has been taken off the burner. So my next plan that will most likely also fail is to live to be 105, and then be shot by a jealous husband while I make love to his 30 year old wife….hehe
  • My only real goal in life is to be happy and healthy enough to get around and watch my kids grow up. I hope they all come true.
