I’ve camped since the early 60’s and I don’t have a generator. Most all of my camping is dry or boondocking and my attitude is I’m “camping” and I don’t need to carry my household appliances with me. I have little use for the boob tube; I’m more of a voracious reader. And I can cook on my stove and oven and make coffee without an electric coffee maker. I’ve thought of getting a small one, but engine noises seem out of place to me in the boonies and I’ve managed to work around recharging my battery. I’m pretty frugal and can get the best part of a week before I have to recharge.
It does limit me from going anywhere I want anytime I want. But that’s not much of a handicap since flat land isn’t attractive to me and all my time is spent at higher elevations in the mountains, thus ac isn’t needed. Cold doesn’t bother me much; I can dress for it and I use down clothes and sleeping bags.
That said, I want to take a long trip to the eastern part of the country and that would be a problem. I’d have to have ac, so a generator or hookups would be needed. Or a possible workaround, make that trip in the fall when it’s cooled down, which will probably be my first choice. I don’t begrudge anyone using a generator as long as they’re far enough away I can’t hear it. But the same applies to tv’s and radios, too.
