We boondock nearly 100% of the time and we don't run our genny at all except when we need air conditioning.
The batteries shouldn't be depleted much below 12.2 volts, as it is very hard on the batteries. We keep ours at 12.5 volts or higher all the time.
THe best solution for power while dry camping is solar. It is not as expensive as you would think. $750 in parts will get you a good basic setup that will let you run the genny very infrequently. $3k will get you a system you can live on full-time and do everything except run your air conditioning.
