We don't have a generator (Yet am thinking about it lately) and we like the quiet. And get annoyed when the neighbor fires it up and I'm taking a nap - we also understand the generator is okay during certain hours, so we live with it.
I sometimes ask how long will you be running it - mostly so I know and can find something to do for that period - and hour, two? whatever.
If I buy a generator, and am firing it up - I would give each side neighbor a heads up about how long I'd be running. That's just plain courteous and gives the neighbor a plan for his time too.
