Dodge a bullet!

While watching TV last night the wife and I hear this thunk noise and then what sounds like water spraying! The fitting on my drinking water filter under the sink BROKE! The little plastic end with the metal clip that snaps to one end of the filter. Good reason to start turning off the water when leaving for the day.
  • Good idea; never even thought of turning it off and we leave for hours and hours at a time. I'll remember.
  • Everybody is talking about turning water off when leaving......yeah that's a good idea

BUT OP wasn't gone.......just lucky to hear it happen.

WE woke up one morning last year to a swimming pool in kitchen/living room and water pouring out the bottom of slide outs. $6000 in damage/motel costs due to OEM flex line and hose clamp.

So it isn't just when you are away from rig.

By the way...there are NO hose clamps on any of my plumbing NOW!

After having a fitting come off in our previous rv a few years back, I always turn the water off when we are away. It flooded the entire front storage under the overhang in the 5th wheel.
  • Great Tip. We boondock 90% of the time. I am anal about shutting off the pump when not using it.

However, when we have full hookups, I am in lazy mode. I didn't even think about shutting down the city water to release that water pressure.

    Good Looking Out!

  • Daughter called this AM to say she found leak under sink of her new house (that we bought for her). DW went over and looked at it and found a screw-on coupling in the drain pipe that had worked lose somehow and was dripping. One twist of DW's wrist and problem solved!!
  • You know, what would be nice is a remoted operated valve to shut off from inside. You could shut off when leaving and when going to sleep (and turn back on) w/o going outside. Hmmmm.
  • Ran into a guy who installed an electric operated valve on his supply line and in his wet bin. He could operate it from his bathroom. He insralled after he flooded his RV one night while sleeping. I rely on the water dog battery alarm. Just have to turn water off when not around to hear the alarm

I was turning off my water when I'd leave but I got to worrying about the after-market electric hot water heater I installed in my Attwood gas hot water heater so now I don't. Under normal conditions, do I need to worry about the heater element burning out if the water's turned off for maybe 8 hours.

The water heater will still be full of water if you turn off the water pump or the city water off. You would have to have a water pipe break very close to the water heater to have it lose the water inside.
