Does anyone else do this (sacrifical ice chest)?

When I go boondocking, one of the things I place by my TT is what I call a sacrificial ice chest. It usually is one to two cheap foam ice chests, filled with ice, and various drinks (bottled water, Gatorade, Shiner Bock, and Guinness.) I usually then leave a sign stating its purpose (take one if thirsty, but please don't completely empty.) Right by it, I usually leave a couple cans of nuts.

So far, I have yet to have someone completely empty it, or steal the ice chests. They are the cheapie Styrofoam ones, so it isn't a big dent on the wallet, but they do remain there, perhaps a few drinks disappearing through the weekend.

The fact that the ice chests have not disappeared, nor all the contents have given me at least a spark of hope for humanity.
  • No I just have my ice chest out there and if they want it that bad I can go to Walmart and get another one for under $40. No big deal.
  • Fill it with free beer. You'll need a much bigger ice chest, and several of them....
But, you will meet a lot of people.
It is a very nice thing you're doing. Keep up the good work. :)
  • Wow...you are a nice guy.
Maybe take it another step next time and leave a pile of gold on your patio mat also...;)

  • I do this because sometimes I meet others hiking by, and it strikes up a conversation, and it is a way to meet people.
  • I'd agree that it's a nice gesture, but does it serve a purpose other than showing you're nice guy?
  • Nice gesture, just not sure why you would do this. Have you been broken into and had drinks stolen from the refer?
