Lots of variation in the responses you've received so far. Me, I travel cheap so your budget would be more than enough, especially for one. I just completed a 7-week trip and spent an average of $236/week. I know now I can do far better. Mainly because I've learned that I don't need (or want to) stay in campgrounds very often. My new goal is $200/week.
I drove 5,550 miles and my total gas costs were $1,197 - fully 72% of the trip expenses. I get 14.5 MPG. I can't control the gas prices so I control what I can. That is, camping fees (I only spent 12 nights in campgrounds - usually state parks), dining out, and no souvenirs other than photos. These are minor sacrifices if it enables me to buy more gas and go, go, go.
