At 37, I'm probably younger than most that are responding here.
I've actually been thinking about this a lot lately. Seems like a lot of my coworkers have had their spouses pass away before they could retire. I have a cousin and my sis-in-law's brother that are both 50 and dying of cancer, a few months to live. Makes you realize that right now, we are healthy and employed, we're never going to have a better opportunity to do what we want to do.
I pay my bills, I have a 401K that I hope is enough............but I'm using every single day available to spend with my kids (they are 11, 9 and 5).
So many people I know are so completely dedicated to their jobs, working 6-7 days a week for 10+ hours a day. Why? None of them are poor or feeding a family overseas. What's the point? Slow down a little and enjoy every day. Scale back on the fancy car and work a little less; mine is 10 years old and I work 2-3 days/week. Get a hobby, get a camper and go sit on the beach for a weekend. See something new. Get out of the office.
